    Although not professional.

I use those three seperate bulb, post livingroom lamps.

The one where each fixture can be rotated and turned off and on.

Stands about six feet tall and has a good heavy base.

The maximum bulb wattage is going to depend on the lamp itself and should not be overloaded according to factory specifications.

That is the lamp not the bulb.

If I just want brightness I use the bulbs that are reflectered on the back.

Lighting from above is a milk crate and Gaffers tape with a 20 pound weight to keep the crate steady if on end.

This is for inside, sets, and limited outside use.

Lighting in my opinion, seeing as how it involves electricity and heat should not be taken lightly.

    So.

    Ground everything.

Water near a power source is a bad idea unless you plan to film your own death.

Buy a Fire Extinguisher or several that will put out electrical fires and keep them handy.

Ralph suggests using regular incandesant lamps. The only problem with this is the colour temperature... it will make your videos have a reddish tint to them...

Flourescent lamps will cause a greenish tint.. etc.

These lights are still great if you white balance accordingly, etc.

I recomment tungsten lights.. not only can you get them in 1000W sets, ie. 1 light does a small room...

    Ah well...

Another thing I recommend in investing in are some gels and diffusion paper. ESPECIALLY if you are going to use tungsten lights, or any light source that is 150watts plus! Then you have CONTROL!

I use halogen quartz lights that i picked up from a hardware store for $20 with bulbs up to 500watts, then I bought some tripod garden sprinklers, bodged a pole into the tripod and viola! a tripod light for under $40, all up i have three lights with total capasity of up to 1500watts for under $90......Yes, i am cheap! If not this idea, then house lamps are ideal and probably cheaper.

you can buy gels and bulbs from Calumet, there is one in LA.
Gels are coloured transparent plastic that change the colour of your light.
diffusion paper changes the quality of light makes it softer but they don't alter the colour.
Buying lights check out www.loot.com I think there's a US version and search ,you can get some real bargains.

why do you need to buy ? why not hire

also YOUR FILM AND VISION will dictate the lighting needed for your film,

Also one set of lights for one scene may be jack arse useless in another,

Also Gels = Transparent coloured bits of plastic

Diffusion doobrie = White semi transparent stuff

also a few other useful things for you

Polyboard = big bits of polystyrene white one side black the other to use as reflectors or to kill spill.

Flag stand = use it to hold your polyboard!

Does anyone know about lighting? I need some kind of affordable lighting kit to light my movies.

It should have all the standard lights. Whatever those are. Any suggestions on what to get and where to get it along with some prices?
